Ender’s Game (2013)
PG Gavin Hood – Director
Harrison Ford with lines riven on his face is a long way from Star Wars or Blade Runner in this fairly comic view of interplanetary conflict. He is Colonel Hyrum Graff and his mission is ‘to school’ only the best brains – young children, that can save Earth from the Formics – a race of ant like insects. The film reminded me of a more innocent version of Starship Troopers (directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1997 ) which was more surreal with gothic gore and a laughable script.
This children’s yarn takes on a more sinister aspect highlighting the change from teenager too adulthood – as the film culminates – but this is no film about rites of passage.
Ben Kinglsey as the Fleet Commander Rackham, steals the show and my son will no doubt enjoy reading the award winning novel by American author Orson Scott Card when he is a little older – meanwhile he rather enjoyed this tale of galactic adventure.
