Copeland -Have I Said Too Much – No Not Really…
An outlandish drummer with a father who worked for the American government as a CIA agent Copeland has lived a very didactic life. His father and family knew Kim Philly when they were based in the Middle East. Later his career blossomed when he teamed up with the “ the magnificently high browed poet King Stingo” and then never looked back.
In interview at the Apex with a very proficient Carrie Fisher look alike Copeland is no shrinking violet, eloquent and aware of his power of success and past associations he ran through at speed his curved ball of life so far.
Stewart served as roadie with Wishbone Ash and replacement drummer with Curved Air before he assembled the Police unit and then they ruled the planet for 5 years and welcomed back with huge sell out tours many years later.
The Police emerged from the punk rock era, with Copeland knitting Sting and then Andy Strummer into the group, the latter was a very successful and highly paid session guitarist who most wanted to be front and centre on the credits and prepared to take a chance on joining the duo.
Clearly, Copeland has magnetism to bring such self seeking individuals, together which probably accounts for the fact they did not last in terms of rock bands but did leave a lasting legacy.
He now has 7 children, prefers film scores and orchestral works and arrangements to collective Police activities. All good and entertaining on the night, but we were disappointed with the short Q&A and very disappointed no drumming not even on a djembe !
PPS goodie bag was so so sad.
