The Pretenders

Chrissie Hynde, a living legend, now 73 swept onto the stage in blue jeans, black above the knee boots with a black skull t-shirt combined with a pink jacket – the later soon departed as she hit the ground running with her 4 piece band – no keyboards, three guitars and drums so powerfully bass driven!

This sometimes marred her vocals which are still intact and most notably seen on the ballads at the end of the show – I’ll Stand by You and Middle of the Road where she also took the opportunity to seize and work the harmonica. Lead guitarist, James Walbourne was a whirl on Time the Avenger and in another frenzy on, You Can’t Hurt a Fool. Chrissie’s rendition of her own lyrical work Private Life took me back to a paired down oozing Grace Jones cover which I love had echo and beautiful acoustic guitar.

The only hint of her growing on the road fragility was her comment … “Kind of burnt out as been on tour since May” which she immediately realised was a momentary senior lapse, as not really what the audience wanted to hear ! so she quickly moved on with a word and a nod to James to deliver: Thumbelina was duly rolled out. He then nailed another, Hate for Sale which I believe was his stand out psychedelic solo of the night. All was right with the world when Brass in Pocket was in the encore – and I had noted not always played on tour- lucky old Ipswich.
