The Man with the Golden Gun was Lulu
Lulu kicked off her stage performance with Shout which was appropriate as it was the starting gun on her career, she was just 15 and with a glowing endorsement from Lennon and McCartney she was on her way. She is certainly garrulous happy to share tales throughout. On the next song Heatwave she duetted with her sister Edwina on vocals and for a moment we wondered if there was a doppelgänger in the house! Lulu has collaborated with many leading artist Neil Diamond, Maurice Gibb (whom she was married to) David Bowie and also Sidney Poitier where she starred in an academy nominated award winning film To Sir With Love. She sung the title soundtrack which became a USA number one in absolutely compelling manner to end her first set.
Sadly a lot of her footage contained sequences or duets with leading men who are no longer with us ( Roger Moore and Christopher Lee popped up as well) starting so young and now 76 she has outlived most, but we really enjoyed the combination of Lulu singing with a screen icon and the 2 stage film live cameras following her around on stage provided a really entertaining perspective
The second set featured more of the same, with a Tina Turner song I Don’t Wanna Fight written by Lulu and her brother, a surprise appearance from Nik Kershaw (local boy); Relight My Fire which became her list UK number one with Take That and finishing with a encore and reprise of Shout a real crowd pleaser to rapturous applause and everyone on their feet. If you have talent it never fades away.
