Christmas Howlers & Highlights
What has driven me nuts in the run up to Christmas (not that I watch a lot of TV ) but it is everywhere, is the John Lewis sickeningly saccharined ‘Watership Down’ TV advert that apparently cost £7million to produce accompanied by, painful to the ears, Lily Allen cover song, Somewhere Only We Know – a combination that for me is totally suffocating. Please no more! Still I must be in the minority as the Company has reported strong seasonal trading.
One of my colleagues however, must have felt sorry for me, she sent me an alternative ‘gothic version’ of the John Lewis classic which also questions the Governments decision to cull our wildlife. Watch if you dare.
What I have enjoyed, is the clever choice of soundtrack for Google and their Nexus 7 campaign to challenge Apple’s dominance in the tablet market.
The killer application is choosing an old but not well known Slade number Everyday (1974) and the storyline of a man at sea on a tanker – far from home and of course unable to make a last minute dash – even if he could for the airport -a perfect counterbalance. Even if the reindeer dog scene at the end is just a touch too much Schmaltz. We all get the message – it’s good to stay in touch wherever you are.
