Watercolours
A big turnout for Hugo ( Associate Director) and his fellow film makers at the Genesis Cinema complex in Mile End, London for film debut of Watercolours.
Just a small niggle, the first scenes were poorly focused, felt there was too much swinging camera movement (maybe deliberate) but. the cinematography radically improved as the film progressed including excellent multiple facial close ups.
Filmed in Amsterdam over 4 days the narrative explores the relationship of two male individuals and how it changes and develops over time and is neatly juxtaposed with an older male couple in a pivotal restaurant scene. Neil playing Mark (golden oldie) was a crowd stealer with his visual and verbal interpretations.

I loved the scene with the chain man (Mongol alert) chasing the leading protagonist through the streets of the capital, his clanging metal dragging along the ground – and the clever bit is you never see his face, so it feels menacing and humorous at the same time. It comes at a crucial point lifting interest and intrigue in the story. It also links with the best part of the film when one of the actors walking across the plaza, is in fuzzy focus and then suddenly captured in full sharpness due to the blazing lights in the square. The two male leads make the denouement & their reconciliation on a bench and then run off as “chain man” makes another appearance!
Only faulty element were the credits where typography felt over looked.
Hugo and girl handled the Q&A with fun and aplomb
An enjoyable evening out. Well done Hugo.
