Shine on….
Sitting with an enthusiastic set of expectant devotees in the ground floor arena of the Albert Hall, David Gilmour delivered an accomplished set of old and new songs ; new from smash hit Rattle that Lock album, kicking off with 5am and follow up with A Boat Lies Waiting, Another Tongue and the marvellous enigmatic jazz piece The Girl in the Yellow Dress ; old favourites included High Hopes, Money, Time, & Breathe performed with a set of wonderful accomplished musicians including Phil Manzanera (former Roxy Music lead guitarist) Guy Pratt and a marvellous mellifluous brass soloist, Joao Mello who was lethal in despatching pleasure with every snort, especially on Shine on you Crazy Diamond where he alternated between alto and tenor sax.
Although DG is not one for much stage chat it is perhaps understandable because his breathtaking fret work does all the talking, filling the hall with a shimmering chords of pleasure. Comfortably Numb was a tremendous encore piece, the house standing and a set of lasers flicking around the auditorium creating a closed grid blanket of light. Up ahead of us in the gods two young girls swung enthusiastically to the music – proving he has real cross generational appeal.
We left with our ears dangling with delight – a stunning time less set.
