Maybe Tomorrow….
Stereophonics is a band 30 years young. The on stage assemble now is 4 guitarists, drummer and keyboards, but the band really is focused on the only original player left, Kelly Jones delivering his ballads with husky voice, guitar licks and a layer of full on harmonies.
The songs are mainly uncomplicated lyrics, simple phrases reworks of every day experiences. It all works and he feels authentic – his roots are firmly on display. As teenagers with his friend and cohort Stuart Cable (original drummer) they lived on the same road numbers 54 and 62 moving equipment around in a supermarket trolley, practising and trying to get that elusive record company deal utilising anything to steal an advantage – even a slim gimmick – like sending off a a shoe with their recording tucked inside.

We enjoyed the electric mix from the 3 decades – Superman with a big riff, Geronimo with its bass sax and Angus AC/DC solo added extra valuable content but it was the numbers that you know that hold the high ground Maybe Tomorrow intro sent out a shiver, Mr Writer, Have a Nice Day and Dakota plus one of my favs Just Looking.

Post script. A whisper of a memory, a band in a Sudbury pub, sadly now long gone, used to play Stereophonic numbers which we savoured from the balcony above.
