No Peaches..
Back from Hugh Corwnell concert
Sadly not enough peaches for me.
3 piece band paired back virtually an acoustic set. 2 guitars and drum kit but heavily powered on the lower end with drums and bass guitar intercut with lead guitar. You can hear the Stranglers vibe tryjng to emerge with the bass licks, especially on Nice ‘n ‘Sleazy but badly missing more layering without keyboard or even a backing singer to give it a modern feel and depth. Many of the songs lost their driving energy and after so many become mundane and bland almost like a garage practice session before the song is developed and blooms. Best rendition of the night was Peaches which felt a good stab at the original.
Good to see Hugh in the flesh but a disappointing set. To be honest i enjoyed Carluccio’s restaurant more than the gig, more and made worse as no cover of a favourite, Walk on by.
Ps Pretty certain saw Stranglers at Ipswich Gaumont 5th February 1982!!
