Helvetica a Font God?
Swiss Execution
Helvetica was based on an 1898 Akzidenz-Grotesk typeface created by Berthold but found its true form in Switzerland in 1957 when Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann designed the Helvetica font that we know today. It was created specifically to be neutral and not give any impression or have any meaning in itself. This neutrality was paramount.
Helvetica was designed in post-war Europe, when the world was looking for change and today we see it everywhere on corporate logos, websites and packaging. Its face imparts authority and stability and an easy of navigation which is why New York subway grabbed it for their signage and other big multinational corporations like American Airlines, Nestle, Toyota, BMW and many others flock to it and just importantly the designer fraternity too!
Hence the eulogy to Max Miedinger above!
